Going green is a new way to change your personal lifestyle to help better yourself and the environment. People are choosing to go green and save the environment because they are seeing the negative results of the fast food nation, for example obesity in children. Fast food and going green are complete opposites and we have the freedom to choose which path we take. Because of Mcdonaldization, (which is the growth in fast food companies) fast foods are beginning to dominate over present day society. They are cheap and good to eat, so it is hard to get consumers to think outside of the box. As fast food restaurants become more popular among consumers today, local farmers and markets are becoming less necessary and are starting to fade away. Now that America is seeing the negative effects of fast foods, they are brainstorming ideas on how to stop the Mcdonaldization of society. To support stopping the fast food industry, activists are striving to bring a more ecofriendly and healthier lifestyle available. In addition, they are trying to encourage buying local and homegrown foods. I support the idea of going green because of the positive consequences both on myself and my environment.
There are many positive results of going green. First, it would stop the increases in the fast food industry. Due to everyone buying locally, there would be fewer consumers at the drive-thru. When you buy from the local farmer or market, instead of fast food or going to the supermarket, like Kroger, you are getting a better product. The products that are from the supermarkets are infused with pesticides that are detrimental to your health. The local producers are not using any harmful chemicals on their products and they grow them in the most natural, and ecofriendly way. These local farmers do not use unnatural hormones or chemicals to make the products grow faster. All of the products that are local are healthy because they are not artificial, unlike fast food or supermarkets. Both fast foods and supermarkets share a connection of where they are getting their meat from, the slaughter house. After that, they combine many different parts of the animals to create the meat, and don’t use solely what is good for you, which is inhumane and unnatural. When you buy from them, you are supporting them.
Going green is simple and easy, because there are local farms and markets available in every community. The farmers have a job of harvesting their crops and they need to make a living by selling them to consumers. It is simple and easy to go to the local fruit stand and buy fresh and inexpensive products that taste better than the artificial items at the grocery. Going green is a positive alternative because of the prices. The local farmers and markets are willing to cut down on their prices because they are not in high demand, unlike stores that are competing on the national level.
Furthermore, going green is beneficial through your support to the local markets and farmers. When you buy from them you are keeping the money of the community in the community. The money you spend at the supermarket, it is distributed throughout the share holders within the company, and some of that money goes to the farmers that are artificially creating the products, or inhumanly slaughtering the animals. When you buy locally you support the community through your compensation and you are stopping the industrialization of the artificial products and the fast food chains.
Going green has many positive outcomes and should be considered by everyone. The prices of local and homegrown products are inexpensive, and the trip there is just as far as your local supermarket. Going green isn’t just about recycling; it’s about making food choices that are healthier for us and the animals we’re consuming. When you go green you are choosing the most natural and healthiest option. I think it also happens to be the most ecofriendly option we can choose to help save our environment.
